Phragmites Update – October 2024

It has been a very busy autumn so far for quite a few of us on the board. We hope that everyone has been able to enjoy this first half of autumn. We’re a little behind on our posts here on the website, so expect quite a few posts to come over the coming days/weeks. First up: phragmites.

Tawas High School National Honor Society students volunteered on a Saturday in early October to assist CBLA board members in removing Phragmites at the Julie Street Easement. Tools, lunches, and other work supplies were funded by a grant from the Great Lakes Commission to support participation in the Phragmites Adaptive Management Framework (PAMF) program, a collective learning and management platform designed to explore the effectiveness of multiple Phragmites management actions. Per the grant requirements, this exotic, invasive plant, which is degrading area wetlands and Great Lakes coastal areas, was removed from our easement by “spading”. The activity will likely need to occur several times to be effective. So, another management event is planned for next spring as part of the grant. CBLA board members will monitor and document the eradication progress. All data will be shared with PAMF, which will help to inform a region-wide effort to keep Phragmites in check. Many thanks go out to the Tawas High NHS students for assisting us with this work!
